With Valentine’s Day around the corner, men are busy purchasing gifts for their special someone. And when we asked some men what they were planning to gift their partners this V-Day, most of them named gadgets. While V-Day special cards and bouquets have dominated romantic gifting for decades, now jewellery, gadgets, books and even life insurance policies are becoming popular gift items among couples.
Rahul Dobriyal, a student of Delhi University, just bought a new smartphone for his partner, who studies in Pune. Rahul says, “Purchasing a mobile phone is a long-term investment. My girlfriend’s phone had gotten damaged. Whenever we talk, there is disturbing sound, which becomes a hindrance in our communication. So I thought, why not gift her something meaningful?” For shutterbugs too, their partners are gifting them mobile phones with good quality cameras.
Ashish Singhal, a freelance content writer, says, “My fiancé has always been a photography enthusiast and wherever she goes, she carries her DSLR. Even for quiet, romantic dates, she will carry that huge device, which at times becomes a little embarrassing. So I am gifting her a mobile phone with a quality front and back camera so that she can click pictures from it whenever she comes out for a quiet outing with me.”
For newly married couples, gifting something like jewellery to your wife and leaving out your mother might land you in trouble. Pankaj Semwal, a software engineer working in Gurgaon, says, “I was planning to gift my wife a pearl-beaded necklace. While searching online for a good piece, my mother happened to see it and started complaining how, after marriage, I have been giving gifts to only my wife. To avoid further complications, finally, I ordered two pearl necklaces – one for my wife and the other for mom.”
Divyansh Gupta, a software professional from Karol Bagh, says, “For this Valentine’s, I had planned to give a diamond ring to my wife as it is also our first wedding anniversary. But I changed that plan when my mother also hinted that she wanted to be gifted something on V-Day. I had to change my option to saris as my mother wanted that. Instead of gifting a diamond ring to wife and a sari to my mother, I decided to gift a sari to both. It was the safest alternative!”
Manohar Dutt, a data analyst, says, “After endless attempts at thinking of a romantic gift for my girlfriend, I ended up with the gift of a life insurance policy for her. I even called up her father to know whether she has one, and he said she didn’t. The gift might sound very unromantic, but my girlfriend will stay happy and healthy in the longer run.”
